JRKMZ Family

I want to be able to post things that happen with our family without worrying about who reads it or who can access it. So, this is our family blog. We will use J, R, K, M, and Z for our names so that its harder to search it. Other than that, I hope to keep family and friends apprized of our sometimes extraordinary, sometimes typical, but always entertaining life on the Rogers Roost Ranch.

About Us

This is a blog about our adventures living and growing on the Rogers Roost Ranch. We are by no means farmers, although we do our best to figure it out. We have focused on the land to regain a sense of the simpler things in life - although farming can be a complex thing. We want our kids to learn the importance of a hard day's work and feel the joy of building a fort or climbing a tree. We want to feel more connected with ourselves and the lives that we touch.

When J and I found ourselves without solid work, we decided to take what we do have and make more of it. We turned to a simpler lifestyle with a need and have stayed for the joy. While we could have gone back to the "normal" life, we had no desire. In fact, we have fought tooth and nail to return to our homesteading life. It has been a few years since we've lived off-grid but our desire to live closer to the land is still going strong.

Our home is a homestead, but by no means is it rustic. We have tile floors, indoor plumbing, and internet...along with all of the other comforts of a newer home. But we are conscious of how we consume. We see each item as a limited resource - turning off lights, using task heating, and living with intention.

We grow a garden - enough to "put up" a few quarts of everything for the winter months. We are learning to use the moderate climate to create a year-round garden for salad greens. It's confusing to us still, adjusting from the harsh winters and short growing season of Central Oregon, but we're trying.

We are certainly not the only family who has done this, but as the chaos of the modern world advances, we find ourselves in the minority - and we don't mind. While most people wouldn't enjoy the challenges of our chosen lifestyle, we find joy in the simpler pleasures - fresh eggs, a well-built fence, garden greens. These are simply the day-to-day events of a small farming family in America.
